Usage of Dictionary

A dictionary is a reference book , the words or other linguistic units in a mostly alphabetically sorted list and lists each entry ( lemma assigns) explanatory information or linguistic equivalents.
A dictionary is used for reference in the strict sense of linguistic information, whereas the expression in the wider sense also includes other structured reference for keywords with primarily factual information as well as mixed forms of both types.
Etymology
The term dictionary is the German one by the Dutch (Woordenboek) does not affect loan translation of the Greek word lexicon (biblion): "Words Affected by Book." It is a complex concept, which was formed after a foreign word, by all components of the foreign word has been translated into German separately. Until the 17th Century into the lexicon and concepts used Dictionarium preferred; Dictionarium then entered in favor of the newly introduced Translation Dictionary (also word book) back, and the concept lexicon remained intact. Since the introduction of the word, the meaning of dictionary in general usage has predominantly on "Language Dictionary", the meaning of lexical contrast, narrowed in the tendency to "material dictionary", where lexicon is often used as a synonym for "encyclopedia". As a result, so take one hand and dictionary or encyclopedia Encyclopedia on the other hand, often as opposing concepts.
In technical terms, especially in lexicography (dictionary research), but is retained even in the dictionary further importance as a generic term for all types of reference works with a breakdown by key words. Similarly, the termencyclopedia in technical language contexts is still in its wider sense, ie including sprachlexikographischer works, and in linguistics also used specifically for the inventory of lexemes of a speaker or a linguistic community.
Dictionary useDictionaries are designed to help users, lexical knowledge gaps to close, must therefore be structured so that information can be looked up quickly and effectively. Both single-and multi-lingual dictionaries require the user two conditions:
  1. The systematic understanding of the dictionary.
  2. The searched lexeme on the basis of the systematics associated lemma assigned.
The dictionary use research - or teaching dictionary - deals with user expectations of dictionaries ("What questions will be answered in what dictionary?") And examines the conditions for successful use of dictionary. The findings are incorporated into the creation of new dictionaries, or in existing dictionaries, which are transferred to other media.
A detailed overview of German dictionaries and lexicography are hate-Zumkehr (2001).
