Lantern Festival

For the tourists interested in festivities and culture, one of the best times to visit China is around its Chinese New Year period which falls in mid February every year. It is indeed one of the most spectacular seasons in the Beijing calendar and a highlight for any tourist visiting the metropolis at this time. The event is generally celebrated on the first lunar month's fifteenth day in accordance with the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. The city takes a grand festive atmosphere with colourful lights and lanterns lighting up the whole region making it a fairy ground for anyone in the area.

Among the many things that take place during this period is the cooking of yuanxiao, a stuffed dumpling in soup. It is one of the festive activities, symbolizing being together as the roundness of the dumpling symbolizes wholeness. On the day of the event there are brightly lit lanterns in varying shapes and sizes everywhere and people walk around to see these beautiful lanterns under the full moon. During the festival there are popular hangouts, where a number of events take place. Qianmen Shang Yuan Lantern Party is one such event where the lion dancing performances are held. Here a wide variety of competitions take place to keep the crowds entertained irrespective of whether they are young or old. There are a large number of handmade lanterns which have been decorated and lit up using old as well as the latest technology making the environs an eye-catching vibrant place, thus gathering a large crowd.

There are many lantern festivals happening at many places across the town and some of them are Yuanmingyuan, Changdian and Zizhuyuan where many shows are held.
